Funeral services set for longtime Southern administrator

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Funeral services for Elton Harrison, a longtime Southern University administrator, have been set.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, there will be a viewing at Hall Davis and Son Funeral Service, 9348 Scenic Highway, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Friday Sept. 26, there will be a viewing at 9 a.m. at Camphor United Methodist Church, 8742 Scenic Highway, followed by Memorial Rituals at 11 a.m., expressions at noon, and the funeral at 1:30 p.m.

Harrison died Sept. 20. He was 97. He served as vice president of Academic Affairs. He also helped develop Southern's College of Engineering and formerly served as a member of the Southern University Board of Supervisors. The main street on the Baton Rouge campus is named in his honor.

According to author Everett D. Gibson in his book “A Portrait of Southern University,” Harrison was “noted for building strong departments, especially in the College of Sciences, including the departments of mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science and biology.”

Harrison received his undergraduate degree from Southern, a master's from Fisk University,and a doctorate from Ohio State University.

“Dr. Harrison was dedicated to Southern University and was always willing to make suggestions that would improve how educators communicated to students,” said Acting Chancellor Flandus McClinton. “That interchange was at the heart of what made Dr. Harrison so special. “He will be missed.”
