GONZALES, La. (WAFB) - In Brock Matherne’s second season as head coach, East Ascension took the forward step they were looking for.

After finishing 2024 with a 3-7 record, the Spartans flipped that mark to end the 2025 regular season. They would defeat West Ouachita in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Central in the second round.

The next step in year three is an obvious task. “Getting to Thanksgiving and getting to the quarterfinals.” Matherne said.

In last month’s spring game against Thibodaux, the Spartans offense moved the ball down the field with a lot of big plays while the defense was flying around. However, that performance fell off in the second half of the contest. Matherne believes his guys have to do a better job of moving on to the next play regardless of the previous outcome.

“We have go to learn not to be affected by success nor failure. We got to be able to show up and that is what this group is learning.”
