BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Regular unleaded gas prices in the metro Baton Rouge area are now topping the $4-a-gallon mark at many stations, though not all locations are above $4.

Examples include $4.19 per gallon at the Speed Zone at College Drive and Corporate Boulevard in Baton Rouge, $4.29 at Benny’s on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, and $4.19 at the Southern Belle Truck Stop in St. Francisville.

Nationally, the price of a gallon of regular gasoline climbed 31 cents in the past week, spiking to an average of $4.55 per gallon Thursday, according to AAA. The national average is up about 50% since the war with Iran began, the Associated Press reported.

The main reason drivers are paying more at the pump is rising crude oil prices tied to the global energy disruption caused by the war, according to The Associated Press. AP reported that the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow passage of the Persian Gulf through which about a fifth of the world’s crude oil normally passes — has effectively been shut down, leaving some oil tankers stranded and unable to deliver crude.

AP also reported that gasoline prices fell for nearly two weeks in mid-April amid signs the conflict could be winding down.

Note: Gas prices can change frequently and vary by location.
