Saints claim former Bucs WR and Kentwood High star Trey Palmer off waivers
A second former Tangipahoa product, DE Tyrus Wheat, also has a new NFL home
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Following being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wide receiver Trey Palmer was claimed off waivers by the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday (Aug. 27), according to ESPN.

ESPN’s Adam Shefter also reports that the Saints claimed former Broncos guard Xavier Truss.
New Orleans is looking to add to a wide receiver corps that lacks depth alongside a second-year starting quarterback in Spencer Rattler. In comparison, Palmer became a roster cut casualty in a receiver room that had become too crowded in Tampa.
Palmer, a Louisiana native, was an elite two-way prospect from 2015-18 coming out of Kentwood High Magnet School.
Palmer was a member of the 2019 National Champion LSU Tigers offense that featured Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, and Ja’Marr Chase as a freshman. He spent two more seasons in Baton Rouge before transferring to Nebraska his senior year, where he became the Huskers’ No. 1 receiving option.

In 2022, Palmer totaled 1,043 receiving yards for the Huskers and hauled in 12 touchdowns.
The Bucs drafted Palmer in the 6th round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Palmer also recorded the fastest 40 time for receivers in that combine, clocking in at 4.33.
Another former Tangipahoa Parish prospect also has a new NFL home. The Detroit Lions claimed defensive end Tyrus Wheat on Wednesday after he was released by Dallas. Wheat went undrafted in 2023 before signing with the Cowboys. He played college ball at Mississippi State and was a former star safety for Amite High.
Palmer has a reputation as a playmaking threat and vertical threat downfield.
