United Cajun Navy asking for donations to help tornado victims
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - One local organization is helping people in Mississippi pick up the pieces following Saturday’s severe weather. They’re asking for your help as they focus on recovery.
Downed trees, destroyed homes, and debris spread for miles is all that’s left in Tylertown, Mississippi after multiple likely tornadoes touched down Saturday.
“It’s pretty devasting out there,” said Founder and President of United Cajun Navy Todd Terrell. “Subdivisions were leveled, and some houses are still standing, it’s just kind of crazy.”
After Terrell saw the damage there, he and hi team with the United Cajun Navy were quick to answer the call for help. Their first truckload of supplies left Baton Rouge over the weekend with everything from temporary cots to gas and generators and water. These are items Vice President Brian Trascher said give them a good starting point.
“We have sort of a checklist for an initial load and once our assessment team is there on the ground, they can call back and let us know what else is needed,” explained Trascher.
However, what they need is not always what’s on hand. That’s why Terrell said they’re now relying on digital donations instead.
“The main thing we need help with is our Amazon Wish List and you can go there and order it and that changes daily, sometimes several times a day, of what the need is and what we don’t have,” said Terrell.
That way you can do your part, no matter how small, to help our neighbors get back on their feet.
“People have literally lost everything and we know what that’s like in Southeast Louisiana so you can just imagine like waking up and having nothing, so pretty much anything and everything you can think of that you would need on a daily basis is what’s needed,” said Trascher.
Terrell said they are also looking for volunteers to help with the cleanup process. If you’re willing and able, you can sign up on their website.
