PENTICTON, British Columbia (AP) - Royal Canadian Mounted Police say a convicted killer who escaped from a federal prison in Louisiana last month was stopped in a stolen car, but eluded capture.

The car was stopped about a week ago in southcentral British Columbia.

The driver fled, but an officer later recognized him as 47-year-old Richard Lee McNair, a martial arts expert with a history of carjacking who escaped from prison April 5 in Pollock, La.

Fingerprints from the vehicle confirmed the identification, a digital camera in the car contained recent images of him and police also recovered an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and receipts.

Police say McNair, an Oklahoma native, should be considered armed and too dangerous for civilians to approach.

He was serving a life sentence for killing truck driver at a grain elevator in Minot, North Dakota, during a burglary attempt on November 17, 1987.

McNair escaped from a North Dakota jail the next year and from the North Dakota State Penitentiary in 1992.

In his latest getaway, McNair hid beneath a pallet of mail bags that was taken by van from a prison warehouse to a postal operation, where he fled to freedom.
