Angler reels in 37-pound tripletail, fourth largest in Louisiana history
Catch nearly beat the world record for a tripletail
VENICE, La. (WAFB) - Ryan Stogner was already having a good day on the water when he pulled in a 25-pound tripletail. Then he hooked something bigger.
Stogner and a friend were fishing earlier this month with Capt. Kyle Landry of Fish Venice Charters when Stogner landed a 37-pound tripletail — the fourth largest in state history.
‘A one in a million fish’
“That size is probably a one in a million fish,” Stogner said.
The catch did not come easily. Stogner said it took some time to bring the fish to the boat.
“It took probably about 10 minutes to get him in; he just stuck to the bottom, just a heavy, hard-fighting fish,” Stogner said.
Record books
Even Landry underestimated the fish’s size. Stogner said the captain initially guessed the tripletail weighed 30 to 32 pounds.
“He had no idea it was going to be 37 pounds,” Stogner said. “The biggest one ever caught is 39.5 pounds in Louisiana and the world record is 40 pounds.”
Stogner said the catch left everyone on board in disbelief.
“It’ll be in the record books forever, and it’s definitely humbling, and you know it just reminds me why we do it,” Stogner said.
