SIMMESPORT, La. (WAFB) - Days after almost two feet of water damaged homes in Avoyelles Parish, volunteers from all over are arriving to help with recovery efforts.

Shiela Shores traveled from Florida to assist with cleanup. After Hurricane Michael destroyed her home in 2018, volunteers helped her recover.

“It’s an eye-opening experience when you can experience what other people are going through,” Shores said.

Shores is now in Simmesport returning the favor by helping secure tarps on damaged roofs.

Danielle Kuykendall with Samaritan’s Purse said the organization needs more hands to help all the requests coming in.

“We’ve got 73 work orders in right now and had a lot more requests piling in Monday afternoon,” Kuykendall said.

Crews assess damage before sending volunteers to clear debris, spray for mold or tarp roofs. Kuykendall said volunteers do more than just manual labor.

“These people have had a lot going on in their lives before the storm ever hit so you have to just go in and be willing to listen to their stories and love on them and just show them, they’re loved and not forgotten,” Kuykendall said.

Shores said listening to those affected helped her through her own recovery.

“Being available when they need you and when they need to talk somebody to be that ear for them not even necessarily sharing about myself but just listening more than anything,” Shores said.

Samaritan’s Purse will remain in Avoyelles Parish until recovery work is complete. The organization is seeking additional volunteers. Those interested can visit Hessmer Baptist Church at 2927 Main Street at 7 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. or call 337-331-5968. Homeowners needing assistance can call 833-747-1234.
