Applications being taken for financial assistance to help cover cost of roof repairs, replacements

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Applications are being taken for a program that allows certain homeowners to get help paying for a roof repair or roof replacement.

The program is called the Louisiana Blue Tarp Program and is being handled by the Louisiana Housing Corporation. The financial assistance comes in the form of grants.

Applications are being taken from residents in East Baton Rouge Parish, Ascension Parish, Iberville Parish, Pointe Coupee Parish, and West Feliciana Parish. The applications will be accepted between Monday, July 14, and Friday, July 18. Any applications received after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 18, will not be considered.

The grants will not be for more than $15,000, and anyone who receives a grant will need to sign a grant agreement. The agreements include restrictions that prevent a homeowner from selling a property for a period of two years. If the property is sold, the homeowner will be required to reimburse the Louisiana Housing Corporation.

To qualify for the Louisiana Blue Tarp Program, you must meet the following requirements:

• Applicants must be the legal owner and primary resident of the property that is subject to roof repair.
• Property must be 100% homestead exemption in the applicant’s name.
• The property cannot be used as a rental property and must be owner-occupied.
• Eligible applicants must have a household income at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
• Condominiums, duplexes, and townhouses are not eligible to participate in the program.

You can apply for the Louisiana Blue Tarp Program in person at the Louisiana Housing Corporation headquarters. It is located at 2415 Quail Drive in Baton Rouge. Applications will be taken between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day.

Interested homeowners can also send in an application through email to bluetarp@lhc.la.gov or by mailing in application documents to the address 2415 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge, 70808.

You will need the following information in order to apply:

• Completed application with all household required signatures.
• Copy of picture ID for ALL household members 18 years and older.
• Copy of Social Security cards for ALL household members.
• Proof of income for ALL household members 18 years and older. (The following documents may be supplied to provide proof of income).
  • Copy of Social Security check stubs or award letter, retirement check stubs or tax forms showing retirement/SSI income.
  • Unemployment award letter.
  • Last four (4) consecutive paycheck stubs.
  • Past two (2) years of tax returns or two (2) months of bank statements (if self-employed).
  • Zero-income affidavit - complete attached form for ALL unemployed household members 18 years and older.
  • Proof of homeowners insurance, if applicable.
  • Copy of homeowners insurance claim, if applicable.
• Proof of property ownership. (The following documents may be supplies to provide proof of ownership).
  • Bill of sale.
  • Title/deed.
  • 2024 property tax statement – property must have a homestead exemption in applicant name.
  • Current mortgage statement.
