KENTWOOD, La. (WAFB) - An AWOL Marine has been charged with an overnight murder in Tangipahoa Parish.
Sheriff's deputies say Aubrey Sikes, 18, of Kentwood, shot and killed 28-year-old Christopher Slater Brown at Brown's home in Kentwood Wednesday night.
Brown's wife told deputies she and her husband were asleep at their home on South Lewiston Road when she woke up to the sound of a gunshot. "She opened her eyes and saw the barrel of a gun and heard a second shot," said sheriff's department spokeswoman Blair Foster. The shooting happened just before midnight.
Detectives say the victim's wife identified Sikes as the shooter. She reportedly told detectives Sikes grabbed her by the arm and "stated that she was coming with him," Foster said. "She was able to get away from Sikes and call 911. Sikes ran from the residence."
Mrs. Brown told detectives that she has known Sikes for nearly three years and he is a family friend. Sikes turned himself in about an hour after the shooting and was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Burglary.
A motive has not been established, Foster said. Foster said Sikes is listed a AWOL (Absent WithOut Leave) from the Marine Corps.
