BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Southern University Board of Directors has voted to uphold the firing of the former band director.

The board met Friday morning to discuss the appeal filed by former director, Nathan Haymer. The meeting was held in Shreveport. A motion was presented to defer the firing for 60 days while the defense conducted their own audit, however, that motion failed, forcing Haymer's termination to stand.

The following statement was released by the university Friday afternoon:

The Southern University System Board of Supervisors today did not grant the appeal of Nathan B. Haymer, former Director of Bands. As a public university employee, he had a right to appeal his termination and now it is final.  Southern University is committed to continuing to support our band program on and off the field. We have no additional comment at this time.

The university fired him in May, and a state audit released this year claims Haymer mishandled thousands of dollars.

He is accused of accepting personal payments for performances, but has denied the claims.
