EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a scam after a local church nearly fell for it.
The Sherriff's Office said on Thursday that a local church received a call from someone claiming to be an Entergy representative.
The caller said the church hadn't paid for their electric bill and threatened the threatened to turn off the power.
Authorities said the scammer told the church to send money through a specific payment processing facility, which was a MoneyGram outlet facility.
The church representative realized the call was a scam and didn't send money to the account. The church then reported the incident to authorities.
The sheriff's office said legitimate companies, such as Entergy, have verified methods of payments. If something doesn't seem right when you receive a call, hang up and call the company's customer service line.
