Southern University offering free course on building, sustaining urban farms

BAKER, LA (WAFB) - Southern University Agricultural Research Extension is offering a free course for community members who hope to learn more about building and sustaining urban farms.

The Sustainable Urban Agriculture Certification Program offered by Southern is an intensive 12 session training and field-study farm tour employing sustainable agriculture practices. According to information provided by officials, participants in the program will become familiar with the techniques and strategies necessary to grow fresh fruits, vegetables, and animals in an urban environment. Participants will also learn to recycle available resources and discarded items to promote healthier lifestyles and communities.

The session specifically helps community members understand how to operate their own urban farms within the guidelines of city government.

The course is open to all ages. The course will be held at the Baker Municipal Center on Tuesdays and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
