GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - East Ascension head coach Darnell Lee is entering his third season with the Spartans and looking to take the next step with his alma mater after a down to the wire second round loss to Live Oak last season.

"Yeah, we're not shying away from anybody when we make our schedules," said Lee. "We want to see where we are early. We open up with Lutcher, Parkview. And then, we have Cecilia, Thibodaux, and St. Charles Catholic. Of course, with district, it's always tough. We just want to take advantage of all of our opportunities and make sure we play Spartan football."

The Spartans, who finished 9-4 in 2017, competed at St. Amant on Wednesday in 7-on-7.

Back for his senior season is quarterback and three-year starter Jason Wakefield, who won't have Jimel London to throw to this season, but guys like Shavionn Robinson and Nyoklas Nassey will be significant contributors. Lee also said they'll have a "slew of running backs" carrying the ball.

On defense, Deshaun Hall leads the way at defensive end. He's a Louisiana Tech commit who stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 250 pounds.

The Spartans definitely don't lack athleticism and now are tasked with putting it all together.
