App to keep driver's license on your phone now available

(WAFB) - Louisiana's new digital driver's license app is now available to the public, Governor John Bel Edwards announced Tuesday.

The app allows drivers to display their license on their cell phone, ensuring drivers will always have access to their license if they have their phone on their person. The app, called LA Wallet, was created under Act 625 by Rep. Ted James.

"Most people never leave home without their smartphone and with this app, they will never be without their driver's license. State Police requested a 'hands-off' and 'no touch' procedure that would not require them to hold a driver's phone. Rep. Ted James, who authored the legislation that led to the creation of this app, is to be commended for his work, as well as the team of Louisianans who designed it," said Edwards.

LA Wallet was designed by LSP, the Department of Public Safety, and the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). The developer, Envoc, is a Louisiana-based firm. The entire development team was made up of graduates of Louisiana universities. The app is the first of its kind to be launched in the country.

LA Wallet is free to download, but there is a $5.99 charge to activate a driver's license or ID to be legally accepted. The digital license will be valid for the duration of the driver's license. Once a driver's physical license expires, they will need to renew their license with the OMV, then purchase a new digital license through the app.

"OMV is proud to make this app available to the public. The safety of the app has been tested with all industry-standard security measures and with PIN protection, it is protected from anyone accessing a user's license information. Also, it does not track nor ask to track the user's location at any time. If a user's phone is lost or stolen, the user can simply log in to online portal to unlink their license information from their mobile device," said OMV Commissioner Karen St. Germain.

The user's license will always stay up to date. If a driver updates their address, for instance, the app will notify them and they will not need to purchase a new digital license. They will simply need to unlink and relink their license.
