Alleged drunk driver arrested after crashing into person sitting on bench
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - One person is in serious condition after being hit by a car on Florida Boulevard Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3 on Florida Boulevard at N 26th Street. Emergency officials say one person was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. Officials say the victim suffered two broken legs, a broken knee cap, had the skin torn from his foot, and a possible head injury.
The Baton Rouge Police Department made an arrest in the case Wednesday. They say the suspect, identified as Ever Hernandez, 39, lost control of his vehicle and ran off the left side of the road, hitting a bus bench where the victim was sitting. Hernandez then reportedly fled the scene.
Police were able to find Hernandez as he was trying to enter his apartment and report he showed signs of intoxication. Hernandez was read his rights and then reportedly admitted to drinking before driving. Officials say Hernandez attempted to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, but was too drunk to do so. He was arrested and breathalyzed. His blood alcohol content measured at .188 percent.
Hernandez is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated (1st offense), careless operation, hit and run, failure to be licensed, and first degree vehicular negligent injuring.
