DARROW, LA (WAFB) - A man from Vacherie was killed in wreck in Ascension Parish Tuesday morning after the dump truck he was driving struck a tree and caught fire.

Officials with Louisiana State Police say just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, troopers began investigating a wreck on LA 942 south of LA 22. The crash claimed the life of Albert Batiste Jr., 52.

LSP says the wreck happened as Batiste was driving south on LA 942 in a 2010 Kenworth dump truck, when for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the truck and ran off the left side of the road, hitting a tree. The truck overturned after hitting the tree, spilling gravel onto the road. The impact caused the truck to catch fire while Batiste was still inside.

Batiste was pronounced dead on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner's Office. Impairment is not suspected as a cause for this wreck, but a toxicology sample was taken for analysis nonetheless.
