2018: Back-to-school events, supply drives

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The first day of school is right around the corner and many organizations are holding back-to-school events and supply drives to get everyone ready.

SUPPLY/UNIFORM GIVEAWAYS & DRIVES
BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLY BASH: Healthy Blue, LexLee's Kids, and Cortana Mall are partnering for their Back-to-School Bash on Sunday, June 30. Thanks to Healthy Blue, more than 600 school supply kits will be given to elementary and junior high students in Baton Rouge. Vendors will also be at the event to share health-related information and provide demonstrations, children's activities, entertainment, and refreshments. The event is free. Each school supply kit will include:
- Calculator (junior high kit)
- Erasers
- Folders
- Highlighters
- Notebook/graph paper
- Pencil/crayon sharpener
- Pencils/pens
- Protractor (junior high kit)
- Rulers
- Scissors
The event will be held at Cortana Mall, located at 9401 Cortana Place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
FROM OUR UNIFORMS TO YOURS: The Walker Police Department's annual From Our Uniforms to Yours drive is underway. Collection barrels are located at the Walker Quick & Handy Cleaners, Stine Lumber, Los Sombreros Restaurant, Shopper's Value, Carter's Supermarket, Walker Baptist Church, and the Walker Police Department. The department is collecting old school uniforms to be donated to kids in need. Collected uniforms will be distributed to families with kids in Livingston Parish schools. Cash donations will also be accepted. Donate through PayPal. Uniforms will be distributed Friday, July 27 at the Walker Baptist Church Fellowship Hall beginning at 8 a.m.
EVENTS
10TH ANNUAL DISTRICT 6 BACK TO SCHOOL EXTRAVAGANZA: Councilwoman Donna Collins-Lewis, in partnership with Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), New Hope Baptist Church, Star Hill Church, and Professional Athletes Supporting Students (PASS), is hosting the event on Saturday, August 4 at the BRCC Wellness Center, located at 201 Community College Dr. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event includes food, school supplies, education on safety, and ID badges for kids. The child MUST be present to receive school supplies.
