ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - An Ascension Parish school was honored with a prestigious national award.

George Washington Carver Primary School in Gonzales was selected among hundreds of schools across the country for the $50,000 Tap Founder's Award. Carver was one of six finalists in the running for the award after years of working to increase student performance in the school.

Principal Latatia Johnson said her staff simply stayed focused on the kids.

"It's not about what's happening outside of the building because you don't have control over that," said Johnson. "What we do have control over is what's happening inside the building and when those students are coming in every day, they're expecting great and they're expecting us to give them great."

G.W. Carver was one of two Louisiana schools who were named finalists for the award.
