(WAFB) - BackgroundChecks.org has researched state DUI rankings and released a report using a combination of CDC, Department of Transportation data, and local state data to create a comprehensive score for each state.
Louisiana was ranked number 13 on the list, with Wyoming sitting at the number 1 sport with the worst DUI problems in the country. New York came in at number 50, with the least problems with DUIs and drunk driving.
The top 10 states were as follows:
- Wyoming
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
- Montana
- South Carolina
- Mississippi
- New Mexico
- Kentucky
- Maine
The bottom 10 states, with the fewest drunk driving problems, are as follows:
- New York
- Massachusetts
- Illinois
- New Jersey
- Utah
- Rhode Island
- Virginia
- Indiana
- Washington
- Kansas
"That fact that over 10,000 people a year die from DUI related accidents is a travesty. We hope this research will open some eyes and make people think twice before drinking and driving," said Trent Wilson, co-author of the research.
According to data released in later 2016 by the CDC and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, DUIs were on the rise during the year.
