World famous Weeki Wachee mermaids to perform at Audubon Aquarium

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) - The world famous Weeki Wachee mermaids will be at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans beginning on November 3.

Performances will be held Tuesday, November 3 through Sunday, November 6 and Thursday, November 10 through Sunday, November 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The mermaids will perform below the surface of the 400,000 gallon Gulf of Mexico habitat, which is currently the home of three difference species of shark, stingrays, and many fish. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet a mermaid up close and have their photo taken next to the penguin habitat.

"Our guests were mesmerized by the mermaids last year and we're excited to bring them back to New Orleans. We hope children will marvel at their performances while being inspired by the marine life and educational opportunities of our aquarium," said Rich Toth, managing director of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.

Approximately 45 minutes north of Tampa, Florida, Weeki Wachee Spring State Park is one of the state's oldest attractions and is home to the famous mermaids. The mermaids have been performing for guests since 1947.

Sea Grass Salon | November 5, 6, 12 & 13 | 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Visitors can be a mermaid just like the ones at the Aquarium! Audubon's "Sea Grass" apprentices will turn guests into a magical mermaid with make-up, hair extensions, and nail color. Boys can join in on the fun too, as "Sea Grass" apprentices transform them into heroic mermen.

To participate, guests must be between 3 and 12 years of age and be accompanied by an adult (18 years of age or older).

The mermaid transformation will take approximately 30 minutes.
