Healthline: Pelvic floor clinic offers specialized therapy
It’s a common condition that many people don't like to talk about, but help for pelvic floor issues may be easier than you think. Baton Rouge is home to a specialty clinic dedicated to those conditions.
Kay McLellan now looks forward to her weekly physical therapy sessions. She does regular exercises to strengthen the muscles that control bladder and bowel function.
“It really did make a difference. It's made a difference in my routine, my weekly routine, my daily routine,” she said.
Her therapist is certified to treat pelvic floor conditions. Lacie Barbier has been helping patients for the last ten years.
“Usually once we get them performing the pelvic exercises and increasing their strength and retraining their bladder or bowel, they see results in about two or three weeks, and then really a lot of them have resolution of symptoms within six weeks or so,” Barbier said.
But getting people in the door is half the battle. Peak Performance Physical Therapy decided to open a dedicated, free-standing clinic with a spa-like atmosphere. There's an emphasis on privacy and comfort so patients feel at ease treating what’s often perceived as an embarrassing condition.
“Most people think that incontinence or urinary frequency is something that just happens as you get older and that there is no help for it,” Barbier explained.
Peak offers non-invasive, conservative treatment that’s said to work better than Kegel exercises alone. Using a special sensor that transmits in real-time, the patient and therapist watch a computer screen as pelvic strength is analyzed and improved. The simple exercises can be done at home to keep up the progress.
The clinic is open to women and men of all ages with a referral from any doctor.
For McLellan the therapy means newfound peace of mind. She's now been able to let go of the anxiety she once felt in public.
“I mean life happens, and I feel much better about coming here after coming here,” she said.
The Peak Pelvic Floor Clinic is located at 10202 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. Most insurance companies cover the cost of therapy. Call (225) 292-2526 for more information or visit peakphysicaltherapy.com.
