BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A proposal that sailed through a health committee in the House on Wednesday means Louisiana women would have to wait 72 hours for an abortion.
Five other states have similar waiting periods. Right now, it is 24 hours.
The bill would extend that by another two days with an exception for women who live 150 miles from the nearest abortion clinic.
:"It is not much to ask to wait three days to have a woman to make that decision that will impact her emotionally for the rest of her life," said Representative Katrina Jackson (D-Monroe). "You're making a decision to either add to your family or subtract from your family before the child even has a chance to breath."
Supporters say a longer waiting period gives women more time to consider alternatives to an abortion, while opponents describe it as just another roadblock in legal proceedings.
