BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Two bills dealing with cigarette and taxes were signed by Governor John Bel Edwards Tuesday.
The first bill Edwards signed into law was HB 14, which was raised the cigarette tax from 86 cents per pack to $1.08.
The bill authored by Rep. Walt Leger, D-New Orleans, will add $11 million to the budget for the current fiscal year with $46 million raised annually from the tax.
HB 18, authored by Rep. Jack Montoucet, D-Crowley, was also signed into law. The bill will reduce the discount amount for tobacco dealers regarding expenses related to tax collection.
It will raise $275,000 for the current budget as well as raise an annual $1.1 million. All the revenue will go into the state's general fund.
Both bills go into effect starting April 1.
