MEMPHIS, TN (WAFB) - A trial date has been set for a former captain with the Baton Rouge Fire Department accused of raping a child in Tennessee.
Roman Bates, 56, of Baton Rouge, is scheduled to stand trial starting Oct. 17, 2016. Bates was booked by authorities in Shelby County, TN in July 2015 and later indicted by a grand jury. He is charged with rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated statutory rape and sexual battery.
Bates is accused of raping a child in Memphis. He was arrested in Orleans Parish on June 23.
Rape of a child is a Class A felony that carries a prison sentence of 15 to 60 years, aggravated sexual battery is a Class B felony that carries a prison sentence of eight to 30 years, aggravated statutory rape is a Class D felony that carries a prison sentence of two to 12 years and sexual battery is a Class E felony that carries prison sentence of one to six years.
BRFD said Bates worked with the department from 1990 until June 2015.
