3 dead, 3 critically hurt after train hits car that stopped on tracks

IBERIA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Three people are dead and three others are hospitalized with serious injuries after a train hit a car Tuesday evening.

Louisiana State Police reported the crash happened off LA 88 near LA 182 in Iberia Parish around 6 p.m.

Troopers said it claimed the lives of Phyllis Leblanc, 70, of New Iberia, Jayla Daigle and Trinity Schmidt. The girls were both 12 years old. Investigators added Steve Leblanc, 49, also of New Iberia, and two other children were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Authorities have not released the names or ages of the injured children.

Tpr. Brooks David with LSP said the initial investigation showed Phyllis Leblanc was driving a 2006 Ford Taurus on LA 88 when she stopped on the railroad tracks. He added an Amtrak train headed east slammed into the car and the impact pushed the car off the road.

David said the crossing had active warning devices (flashing lights, gates or bells).

The Iberia Parish Coroner's Office pronounced the three victims dead at the scene.

According to David, impairment is not suspected as a factor in the crash, but as with all deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, blood samples were taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
