CENTRAL, LA (WAFB) - The Central High School football field will reflect the school's thanks to two universities for helping out one of their own.
Devon Gales was a standout player on and off the field for Central before moving on to Southern University. Gales was seriously injured in the football game between Southern and Georgia.
A crew spent the better part of Friday putting the finishing touches on the field's end zones, one features the Southern University logo and the other features the University of Georgia's logo. Both universities have been instrumental in Gales recovery.
"He was a mentor to me whenever I was on the team, he was a great friend, a leader," Cameron Wesley, a former Central High player said.
"He was just an all-around great person and fun to be around, always had a big smile on his face and I whole heartedly believe he's going to make a full recovery- just because that is how tough he is."
Gales' former coach, Sid Edwards, said an interview wouldn't be long enough to describe Devon's true character.
"Make no mistake about it Devon Gales is a unique human being," he said. "A very special person. God broke the mold when they made him, not just any coaches dream, but just anybody's dream person to be around."
