MEMPHIS, TN (WAFB) - A captain with the Baton Rouge Fire Department is now in Tennessee to face rape charges.
Roman Bates was booked by authorities in Shelby County, TN on Monday and later indicted by a grand jury. He is charged with rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated statutory rape and sexual battery.
Bates is being held in the Shelby County Jail in Memphis. His bond is set at $250,000.
The 56-year-old is accused of raping a child in Memphis a few months ago. He was arrested in Orleans Parish on June 23.
Rape of a child is a Class A felony that carries a prison sentence of 15 to 60 years, aggravated sexual battery is a Class B felony that carries a prison sentence of eight to 30 years, aggravated statutory rape is a Class D felony that carries a prison sentence of two to 12 years and sexual battery is a Class E felony that carries prison sentence of one to six years.
BRFD said Bates worked with the department since 1990.
