Trucker dies after being hit by trooper who was looking for him

TALLULAH, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police reported an Alabama truck driver died after being hit by a trooper in north Louisiana early Tuesday morning while the trooper was looking for him after an 18-wheeler was found abandoned.

The man who died was identified as David Watford, 47, of Cottonwood, AL. The trooper involved in the crash was identified as Master Trooper Kenny Baker. He is assigned to Troop F in Monroe. The crash happened around 12:30 a.m.

Sgt. James Anderson with LSP said troopers were investigating reports of a tractor trailer parked on US 65. Investigators found the big rig and started looking for the driver.

According to reports, a trooper headed south on US 65 hit a man walking in one lane of the highway. He was later identified as Watford and it was determined he was the trucker troopers were trying to find.

Watford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Louisiana State Police reported the crash happened on a dark road. Troopers also noted there was a wide shoulder Watford was wearing a camouflage shirt.

The crash is still being investigated, but impairment is not suspected.
