Deputies identify man shot by homeowner during home invasion
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office are investigating a shooting that happened in the 600 block of Summer Breeze Drive Tuesday morning.
Summer Breeze Drive is just off of Burbank between Bluebonnet Blvd. and Gardere Ln.
According to officials at the scene, detectives believe a man and a woman tried to break into the home around 10 a.m. when the man was shot by the homeowner.
The man shot by the homeowner has been identified by the coroner as 31-year-old Jermoid Wheeler. The coroner was called to the scene and Wheeler was pronounced dead.
Deputies reported that the homeowner was sleeping when he heard a noise at his back door. He grabbed his gun and yelled at the intruder to stop multiple times as they tried to pry open the door.
The owner told deputies that Wheeler entered the house with a crowbar and was walking towards him when the man shot at Wheeler.
The woman involved, who has been identified as 36-year-old Deneatrice Cage-Wheeler, was waiting in a truck when she heard the gunshot. She ran into the house, grabbed the crow bar and went back out to their truck.
Investigators questioned Cage-Wheeler at the scene, telling them that she and her husband were before arresting her on charges of aggravated burglary and second degree murder and theft of goods. She told detectives that she and her husband were looking for a new house.
According to court documents, Wheeler had a lengthy criminal history that dates back to 2004. His record includes drug, armed robbery, and domestic abuse charges. He was sentenced in 2009 to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery. He was given credit for time served and released in June 2014.
