Neighbors provide possible insight into deadly deputy-involved shooting

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - Some possible insight into a deadly shooting involving an off-duty sheriff's deputy has surfaced, as the investigation continues.

Authorities have still not released any names in the incident, which happened on Country Club Lane in Denham Springs around 2 p.m. It happened at a home where a deputy with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office was at the time. The deputy was not injured. It is unclear if the deputy lived at the home.

Neighbors described the situation as unbelievable.

"It was really surprising," said Michael Stafford. "It really was."

Neighbors were still processing the shock Tuesday night of their usually quiet neighborhood being flooded by LPSO deputies and troopers with Louisiana State Police. The shooting at the end of a cul-de-sac left one person dead. The neighborhood was blocked by investigators for several hours as Louisiana State Police investigated.

"My mother-in-law, who is 93, is here, along with my wife, and I was trying to get in and they wouldn't let me. I was very concerned about it," Stafford added.

The investigation centers on what appears to be a domestic violence case. Troopers confirmed the unidentified deputy and a woman were at the home. It appears a suspect walked into the home and began shooting. According to investigators, shots were then fired back. They added the suspect was hit and killed.

Troopers are not reporting how the three people were connected or who fired what shots. However, neighbors said the suspect may have been the woman's estranged or ex-husband and that there may have been some sort of court battle between the two.

"It's an ongoing investigation," said Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP. "It's very fluid, a lot of moving parts, so they are out there trying to determine what happened, why it happened and exactly how."

The investigation continued well into the evening, as the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab processed the scene. Neighbors were just hoping for a peaceful night.

"We just haven't had any trouble," Stafford explained.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
