WASHINGTON, DC (WAFB) - Louisiana has the second highest gun death rate in the nation, according to a new report.
A Violence Policy Center (VPC) analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control showed Louisiana's gun death rate was 19.15 per 100,000 in 2013. It was close behind Alaska, which had a rate of 19.59 per 100,000.
The group said the data revealed states with weak gun violence prevention laws and higher gun ownership have the highest overall gun death rates. The study stated 45.6 percent of Louisiana households had gun owners living in them.
Alabama, Mississippi and Wyoming finished out the top five states with the highest gun death rates.
"Each of these states has extremely lax gun violence prevention laws as well as a higher rate of gun ownership," a written release stated.
The report added the nationwide gun death rate was 10.64 per 100,000.
