BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Police say 2-year-old Da'Laijah Smith was found unresponsive at her home on Beechwood Drive. She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
"I was devastated. I had no words," said Brittany Miller, "I just cried out. I couldn't do anything else."
Investigators arrested her mother, Candice Smith, after they say she admitted to pushing her daughter into a shower wall and allegedly finding multiple signs of abuse. Stephanie Wallace, the grandmother of Da'Laijah, says she raised her granddaughter until last year when Smith took custody of her daughter.
"I told them that the baby is in a great place. She was in a loving home and there was no reason to take her away from here," said Miller, "But I guess she wanted her child, so she came and got her. Now look at what happened."
On top of it all, they say they haven't even seen Da'Laijah in almost a year. Her Christmas gifts are still under the tree.
Now, they're left with only her memories and a hope to find comfort in a higher power.
"We can't do anything else but just leave it in [God's] hands," said Miller, "Just keep moving forward and pray that he works everything out."
