BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Katty Gomez celebrated her 15th birthday - her quinceañero - the Hispanic equivalent to a sweet 16 on Saturday. What she did not expect, however, was the appearance of the Los Angeles county sheriff's deputies that investigated the murder of her mother in 2006.

Gomez moved to Louisiana a few years ago with her grandmother and this is the first time that she has seen the investigators in several years.

"This is one of those situations that really stuck to our heart," said Det. Jorge Padilla with LASD. "How is this little girl, how is her life going to be, without her mother, no father, just her and her grandmother? It touched us and we bonded. Stay in touch with her. Make sure she was okay."

Padilla was so moved by this case that he sees her as part of his family. He got her a cell phone and put her on his family plan just so they could stay in touch.
