GARYVILLE, LA (WAFB) - The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado caused damage in the parking lot of an oil refinery Wednesday morning.
Meteorologists reported an EF-1 touched down in Garyville and hit the Marathon Petroleum refinery there. They added the tornado was around 150 yards wide with wind speeds near 105 mph.
People living in that area of St. John the Baptist Parish said the storms that moved through were especially severe.
Officials with the Marathon released a statement about the damage to its facility.
"As a result of the severe storm this morning, the Garyville refinery experienced some damage and loss of power to part of the refinery," Angelia Graves said in the written release. "We are in process of evaluating the damage and assessing operations. We have made notifications to the appropriate local and federal agencies. There has been no offsite impact. We will provide additional information as it becomes available."
