BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a woman was killed while standing outside of her car after a previous crash late Thursday night.

Louisiana State Police reported Kristina Delaney, 28, Denham Springs, died after an SUV rear-end her car and the impact pushed the car into her. It happened on US 61 south of Industriplex Boulevard in Baton Rouge a little after 11 p.m.

Troopers said the investigation so far shows the first crash happened when Delaney tried to merge her 2008 Honda Civic onto US 61 and hit a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass. They added she stopped in the roadway and turned the car off after the wreck.

According to investigators, she got out of the car and was looking inside it for her cell phone, when a 2004 Honda CRV hit her car from behind and the car then hit Delaney. She was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.

Tpr. Jared Sandifer said impairment is not suspected in the accident, but per protocol in deadly crashes, blood samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime lab for analysis.

Charges have not been filed in the wreck.

The investigation is ongoing.
