CONVENT, LA (WAFB) - Emergency responders were called to the scene of a fire that broke out at the Motiva plant in St. James Parish Monday afternoon.   There were no reports of injuries.

According to Sheriff Willie Martin, emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. Witnesses report seeing black smoke as far away as Donaldsonville.

"They called and reported a level 2 fire," Sheriff Martin explained. "We have some personnel on scene."

He added that there should not be any off-site impact and the fire is now extinguished.

The incident was reported as a "flash fire," said Louisiana State Police Captain Doug Cain. He added that the State Police HAZMAT team was not needed.

According to their website, Motiva is a refinery with the capacity to produce 235,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
