One dead after car hits pole and catches fire

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a man is dead after the car he was driving hit a light pole at a high rate of speed and caught fire early Tuesday morning.

The victim was identified as Brian Richoux, 20, of Baton Rouge.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office reported the crash happened on Millerville Road at Old Hammond Highway around 4:15 a.m.

A witness said he saw the car barreling down Millerville Road toward Old Hammond Highway and just as the car made it to the intersection, the driver apparently slammed on the brakes. He added he heard the brakes screech and watched as the car slammed into a utility pole.

Deputies said a witness told them the car was swerving as it traveled at a high rate of speed down Millerville and continued until slamming into the base of the signal light pole.

The East Side Fire Department was the first emergency crew on the scene. The Baton Rouge Fire Department, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police also responded to the crash.

The intersection was closed for several hours after the crash, but has since been reopened. A crew continues working to repair the damaged utility pole. The impact of the crash knocked a light off the pole.

The crash remains under investigation.
