BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Hundreds of students from across Louisiana will have a chance to show off their math skills this weekend.

The fourth annual Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad will be held at Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School in Baton Rouge.

The event consists of a test-like math competition and dozens of science-based demonstrations for area fourth and fifth graders.

Teachers said more than anything, the Olympiad is meant to ease anxiety that is sometimes associated with math.

"Until they actually try and actually put effort forth, they really don't know how much they can do," said Heidi Saunders of the math department at Kenilworth. "So, this a good event where they can just come try and see that they do actually know some things and they can put things together on their own."

The event has grown since it first started, with 400 kids from 55 schools across the state expected to take part this year.
