SCOTT, LA (WAFB) - A 21-year-old man died after crashing his vehicle on a rural road in Lafayette Parish. Investigators say the impact was so intense it caused the vehicle to split in half.

"It takes a lot of velocity to cause that kind of damage," Capt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, said. "Our impact analysis experts are working now to recreate the scene because we just don't know what happened."

Officials say Leandys Hernandez-Gonzales, 21, was driving his vehicle in the 500 block of Rue Des Babineaux near Scott when he lost control for unknown reasons. The vehicle appears to have hit a tree before coming to rest on the side of the roadway.

"Because he crossed the center line left of the roadway, we do not believe another vehicle forced him off the road," Capt. Judice explained. "The crash was not reported until a motorist observed the victim lying in the roadway."

The passing motorist called emergency responders at roughly 3 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7.

"We are investigating where he left from and how long it was from the time the last person saw him alive to the time when the crash was reported," Capt. Judice noted. "Once we know that, we will have a better time frame to say when the crash actually happened."

A blood sample is being analyzed to determine whether alcohol is a factor.
