SUNSHINE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police said the passenger in a car died after the driver lost control and crashed Thursday night.
The victim was identified as Cedrick Smith, 24, of Plaquemine. The crash happened on LA 75 (River Road) near LA 327 in St. Gabriel shortly after 9 p.m.
State Police reported the initial investigation showed Wilbert Pryer, 23, also of Plaquemine, was driving a 2013 Dodge Charger north on River Road when the car veered off the road in a curve, went through a ditch and hit a telephone pole.
Pryer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Troopers said excessive speed is considered a factor in the crash.
They added they do not know if Pryer was impaired, so per protocol for deadly crashes, a sample of his blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
LSP reported neither man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
