SLU professor blames sea turtle disappearance on humans

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - A professor at Southeastern Louisiana University claims the recent disappearance of sea turtles is due to humans.

Biologist Rold'an Valverde said sea turtles have been around for millions of years.

But according to him, the population of sea turtles has steadily declined in the last 500 years because of technology.

Sea turtles form part of a healthy eco-system.

"It's okay to have technology in the oceans to extract fish, shrimp or any other human activities that happen, but those kinds of things need to be done responsibly," Valverde explained.

He also said the BP oil spill is one of the many examples why human technology hurts the eco-system.
