Body of Civil Rights icon Rev. T.J. Jemison lies in repose at Capitol

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The community is saying goodbye to Civil Rights icon Rev. T.J. Jemison.

Jemison's body is lying in repose in the rotunda of the Louisiana Capitol until 5 p.m. A wake service for Jemison will be held at Mount Zion First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge starting at 7 p.m.

Jemison died last week of natural causes. He served as the pastor of Mount Zion for 54 years and president of the National Baptist Convention. He is credited with helping lead the 1953 Baton Rouge bus boycott.

Hundreds are expected to show their respects Friday.

His funeral will be held at Mount Zion at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Jemison was 95 years old.
