Senate discusses 2 TOPS bills

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) may take another step closer to some big changes Wednesday afternoon.

Two bills dealing with TOPS have made their way to the Senate, a little over week after passing through the House. They are designed to give qualifying students even more options.

HB 243 by Rep. Stephen Carter, R-Baton Rouge, would change some of the current requirements for students who graduate from out-of-state or country high schools.

HB 612 by Rep. Hunter Greene, R-Baton Rouge, would allow students who qualify for TOPS, but go on to college in other states, to come back and use those funds towards graduate studies at a Louisiana institution.

Greene said he has already spoken to a few members of the Senate Education Committee and believes his bill will pass through when it is heard Wednesday afternoon.
