BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Caleb Hatcher delivered the tying and winning runs with a bases-loaded single, and Southern used a six-run eighth inning rally to beat Nicholls State 8-6 Wednesday night at Pete Goldsby Field.
Southern (6-5) outhit the Colonels 12-10, but seven walks kept the pressure on the Jaguars defense. Southern's defense played error-free baseball and was helped by a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch in center field by freshman Brian Ortiz.
Nicholls State (7-7) got three hits and an equally impressive grab in center field by Matt Richard. Reliever Kelby Langston surrendered five runs in just a third of an inning, as the Jaguars erased a 6-2 NSU lead with their last at-bat.
