BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A 60-year-old man died after the SUV he was driving slammed into an 18-wheeler Wednesday evening.

The Louisiana State Police said Wilson Battley Jr. of Port Allen died in the wreck.

The crash happened on US 190 West (Airline Highway) past Scenic Highway near the Huey P. Long Bridge in Baton Rouge around 7:45 p.m.

Troopers said the initial investigation showed Alvester Moore Jr., 51, of Smackover, AR was headed eastbound on Airline in a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer when he tried to make a left turn into a private driveway.

At the same time, Battley was driving westbound in a 2006 Cadillac Escalade and hit the trailer of the big rig as Moore crossed in front of him. According to LSP, the SUV got pinned under the trailer and was dragged off the highway into the driveway.

Per standard procedure in deadly auto crashes, a toxicology sample of Moore's blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers stated they don't know if he was impaired at the time of the crash. They added Battley was wearing a seatbelt when the wreck happened.

The crash remains under investigation and charges may be pending.

US 190 was shut down for seven hours as investigators collected evidence and crews cleared the wreckage. The roadway was reopened a little before 3 a.m.
