2K Walk for Kicks benefits homeless kids in EBR schools
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - There is an event coming up this weekend that can help a lot of children in East Baton Rouge, possibly more than 800 in fact.
The 2K Walk for Kicks is Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Gus Young Park. It is set up to benefit the homeless children in the East Baton Rouge Public School system; and believe it or not, there are currently more than 800 homeless kids enrolled in school right now.
The walk this weekend is to help them with shoes. "So we just came up with the idea of having a walk and instead of people doing a registration fee, they would just donate shoes," said Jodi Lemons with EBR Parish School System Homeless Program.
"We have a lot of students that every day that come through that are sleeping in cars, a lot in shelters and then we have a lot who are doubled up which means they are living with another family because their home doesn't have running water or heat or things like that," said Lemons.
The walk starts at 9 a.m. You are asked to bring a pair of new or gently used tennis shoes as your entry fee. The shoes will go to the children who need them.
