PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities have made an arrest in a rape investigation involving a 72-year-old woman.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said Elmer Ramos, also known as "Jose," of Prairieville is charged with aggravated rape and second-degree battery.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley added Ramos is an illegal immigrant.

He is being held at the Ascension Parish Prison without bond.

US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has also placed a hold on him due to his illegal citizenship.

APSO said it was called to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales to investigate the sexual assault and beating of an elderly woman.

According to reports, dispatchers received the call Monday a little after 5 a.m.

Detectives said the victim had stayed overnight at the home of a Prairieville couple. The couple told them a man known as "Jose" also later showed up to visit.

Investigators said the man who lived at the home had met "Jose" about a year ago in Baton Rouge related to some mechanic work.

The two apparently had met up a couple of times since then.

Deputies reported the man and "Jose" stayed outside talking most of the night.

They said the victim went to bed eventually and didn't know "Jose" was also invited to spend the night.

Detectives said the victim woke up in the middle of the night with a hand over her mouth. She then was beaten and raped.

The suspect left afterwards and the elderly woman was able to let the couple know what had happened.

Wiley said his investigators worked through Monday night and into early Tuesday morning to identify and find "Jose."

He added they identified the suspect as Ramos a little after midnight.

He was then arrested around 2:30 a.m.
