ST. HELENA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - It's an honor that recognizes school districts with top quality education. Wednesday afternoon, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools recommended St. Helena parish schools get district accreditation.
In fact, they say St. Helena scored as high as some of the top performing districts in the nation. For the past few days the SACS group has been observing in the classrooms at the elementary and high school and interviewing teachers, students and community members. The district will now have a mark of excellence: an honor that means students will have more access to federal loans and scholarships.
"To have a decision like this from a national committee, it speaks wonders of what's going on in this parish as a whole," said Devone Holiday, a parent who the committee interviewed during their review process.
"It doesn't stop here. If anything it's just the beginning. And I want to say, once again, we are not defined by the grade we receive from the state," said Kelli Joseph, St. Helena Schools superintendent. "We are defined by what we do every day in our school system with our students."
