BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A "reduction in client call volume" is the reason Convergys is shutting down leaving hundreds of people without a job.

"A complete shock. A complete shock. People (are) just sitting around like what to do. What we going to do next?" said a Convergys employee, who asked their identity not be revealed.

Confusion among an entire staff is how one employee described the atmosphere after nearly 300 people received a letter Tuesday.

It states Convergys intends to permanently close its Baton Rouge facility. The letter stated "As a result, your employment with the company may end on or before May 31, 2012."

"They just tell you after 60 days, that's it. They have people who have been here for years, and they don't get any severance or anything, and they talk about how great of a company that is, but I don't believe that's right," said employee.

Convergys opened in the Capital City 12 years ago in 2000 bringing about 900 new jobs. It first served as a call center for AT&T. In 2008, they cut back 200 employees. Now, a reduction in client call volume has forced them to close.

The company said, "The decision to end work in Baton Rouge is strictly a business matter between the company and client."

But sources tell 9News because Sprint did not renew their contract with the call center, Convergys is shutting down leaving hundreds looking for a job in a fragile economy.

"Now we have to start scraping not knowing where we going to get our next dollar from," said employee.

In an emailed statement to WAFB, Convergys is trying to determine the availability of work at home positions for those facing layoffs. Plus, they will try to help their employees transition into other jobs.

"They told us they would have job fairs, but how do you compete at a job fair with 300 employees," said employee.

The call center told employees in good standing may be able to pursue jobs at other Convergys location, but the closest one is in Longview, Texas.

The layoffs will come on or before May 31, 2012.
